It's funny how the details always seem to take the longest when decorating a space. I think it's because the details are truly what sets a space apart and takes it from OK to WOW! I love pouring over photos of others work for inspiration and really getting into what details in that space really allowed it to feel so complete and balanced.
I'm currently working with a client on custom bookshelves. Initially, the built-ins had a standard recessed panel door…

but I just felt it needed something more so we can up with this design, using trim to make a cross and adding decorative hardware in the center:

Now it's on to figuring out something for the back. I've thought about backing them with antique mirror, textured wallcovering or paint. The room definitely has a glamorous feel to it so mirrored would be ideal but at the same time, I don't want to go over the top on the shimmer scale for this space (we already have a silver-leafed accent table and a mirrored desk) plus the client's budget really dictates we look at paint.
With that in mind, I hit the Internet looking for inspiration. My client's question – should I do glass shelves or painted shelves to which I didn't immediately have a response. My instincts told me it depends on how we treat the back. In looking at all the inspiration online, it seems like traditionally you go with the painted shelves. I think the contrast helps the back pop more. So, now do I go with white shelves and contrast back or paint everything the same color. Do we paint that back the same color as the walls or do something totally different?
Ahh, the life of design. As soon as you answer one question, seems like you come up with three more. I'm thinking white shelves but still haven't signed off on that in my mind yet. Love how both look. Here are some of the inspirations I found:
